    Acid Trance is a love letter to a very specific musical moment – the early 1990s, when acid house and trance were producing some of the most hypnotic and genuinely strange popular music ever made. Pulsating synthetic basslines provide the characteristic squelching, sliding movement of the 303, sparse drums keep the pulse without overcomplicating the texture, and ambient soundscapes fill the space with the particular quality of music made to be experienced in a large room at an unreasonable hour. There are even some repetitive vocal elements, because the era demanded them, and the whole thing puts you in mind of those extraordinary archival videos of early rave culture with an affection that is difficult to resist.

    Encyclopedia Absurdica refuses to be categorised, which is part of its considerable charm. Semi-random bleeps and chirps bounce around the stereo field in patterns that hover between organised chaos and genuine melody, whilst pumping drums provide just enough rhythmic structure to stop the whole thing from dissolving into pure noise. A rich analogue synthesiser provides tonal warmth that grounds the craziness in something with real sonic character. The overall effect is one of relentless, cheerful energy – the kind of music that genuinely cannot help itself and wouldn’t want to even if it could. It maintains its frenetic enthusiasm from start to finish without ever tipping over into something genuinely unpleasant, which is a more difficult feat than it appears.

    Excellent for comedic content, madcap intros and outros, and any YouTube video where the energy level needs to be immediately and obviously extremely high. Works well for fast-paced games and gaming content, particularly anything with an absurdist or surreal aesthetic.
