Dark Side Of Mars is named for its inspiration – the battlescape music from the original XCOM game, that masterpiece of strategic tension where every mission felt like it might be the last. That specific atmosphere of industrial dread and slow-burning threat is reproduced here with considerable skill. A deep grinding bass establishes the character immediately whilst distorted percussion adds industrial weight, and horror elements – screeches, shrieks, and tapping – build the texture into something genuinely unsettling. The piece maintains its oppressive atmosphere throughout without ever resolving into something comfortable, which is precisely the point. This is music for situations where comfort would be inappropriate.
