This collection covers two related registers. There’s the state-ceremonial one — military marches, massed male choirs, balalaika and cimbalom, that particular blend of the triumphant and the faintly ominous. And there’s the folk one: klezmer clarinet, Balkan dance rhythms, and the sort of wedding music that starts respectably and does not stay that way.
It’s a style with genuine, consistent demand and almost no decent royalty-free supply, largely because it needs specific instrumentation played with real conviction. A synthesised approximation of a male choir singing an anthem is an immediately recognisable failure. These were composed and produced properly.

The marches take themselves entirely seriously, which is the only way they work. The folk material takes itself considerably less seriously, which is also the only way that works.
This is music of enormous collective conviction – whether that collective is a state choir or a wedding party with a clarinet. The folk end belongs with the traditions in my world music collection, whilst the ceremonial marches share their scale with my epic tracks. For period-authentic recording character, the vintage collection supplies the crackle.
